Intelligence plus character – that is the true goal of education. (Martin Luther King Jr)
The Purpose of Education for Personal Development
Personal Development underpins all aspects of school life and is intrinsically linked to our school’s values: #GREAT. Our PSHRE curriculum is a significant part of our Personal Development strategy but other curriculum areas and wider opportunities also provide the platform for developing the knowledge, attitudes, skills, relationships and behaviours that our pupils will need now and in their future years.
Our curriculum drivers (vocabulary acquisition, cultural capital, cultural awareness) are at the heart of all personal development opportunities, helping students to understand, navigate and communicate within a rapidly changing 21st Century world.
Curriculum Implementation
At Atlas Academy, Personal Development is approached through:
- PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH, ECONOMIC CURRICULUM (PSHE)
- RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION
- SAFEGUARDING CURRICULUM
- BEHAVIOUR CURRICULUM
- HEALTH & WELL-BEING
- BRITISH VALUES
- SPIRITUAL, MORAL, SOCIAL & CULTURAL
- CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
- PUPIL LEADERSHIP inc PUPIL VOICE

Impact of the Curriculum
In PD, we are looking to work with The Skills Builder Partnership to support the development of essential skills across our school curriculum. There are eight core skills which children work on throughout their time with us here at Atlas.
In addition, we measure impact of PD through:
- behaviour and attendance data
- lesson observations – how well children are contributing to discussions and how they articulate ideas about relevant themes;
- learning walks – how well the curriculum intent is embedded
- pupil voice – enables us to listen to pupils’ views about their learning and how well opportunities we provide are contributing to their personal development
- parent voice – enables us to listen to parents’ views about how well they feel their child is learning and developing and what contextual information can inform our responsive curriculum
- feedback from staff – how pupils respond to learning and issues that arise
To monitor impact, we will use the following impact statements to evaluate how effective our PD curriculum is:
- Pupils will have high expectations of themselves and a drive for excellence. They will learn how to apply the knowledge and skills they gain across the PD curriculum. Pupils will have the necessary dispositions, character and academic qualifications to live a life full of choice and opportunity.
- Pupils will learn to value family, community and the environment. They will make positive contributions to the life of the school and those around them.
